L2 Cloud Engineer AWS
Job Description
The L2 AWS Cloud Engineer and Consultant plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between enterprise clients and our global service delivery teams. Acting as a trusted technical advisor, this professional spearheads Day 1 activities, including initial technical consulting, architectural discovery, and the seamless onboarding of new client infrastructures into our managed services portfolio. Transitioning into Day 2 operations, they serve as the primary L2 escalation point, utilizing a proactive "sysops" mindset to rapidly resolve complex infrastructure bottlenecks, lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations, and enforce strict SLA compliance. Beyond day-to-day firefighting, they continuously drive infrastructure automation using Terraform and actively collaborate with stakeholders to implement FinOps cost-optimization strategies. Ultimately, this role demands a unique blend of deep cloud expertise, multi-tenant adaptability, and the consulting acumen necessary to translate sophisticated technical solutions into clear business outcomes for executive stakeholders.
Role & Responsibilities
Day 1 Responsibilities: Consulting, Client Advisory & Transition
- Technical Liaison & Consulting: Act as the primary technical point of contact and advisor for enterprise clients, translating complex business requirements into scalable AWS strategies and bridging communications with the global delivery team.
- Assessment & Scoping: Conduct initial environment discoveries, review existing AWS infrastructures against the AWS Well-Architected Framework, and recommend strategic improvements.
- Transition & Documentation: Lead the onboarding and transition phase of new client environments into the managed services portfolio; establish, update, and maintain comprehensive runbooks, architectural diagrams, and Confluence documentation.
- Change Planning: Collaborate with solutions architects and customer stakeholders to plan, risk-assess, and draft implementation paths for complex technical migrations or upgrades.
Day 2 Responsibilities: Operational Managed Services & Optimization
- Incident & Problem Management: Serve as the L2 escalation point for complex infrastructure issues (e.g., networking bottlenecks, RDS performance degradation, IAM permission conflicts) and lead Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations to deliver permanent fixes.
- SLA & On-Call Ownership: Maintain strict adherence to client SLAs for high-priority incidents and participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to resolve critical enterprise production outages.
- Deployment & Change Management: Manage and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines (AWS CodePipeline, Jenkins, GitLab CI) and leverage Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CloudFormation) to ensure absolute environment consistency.
- Continuous Patching & Upgrades: Plan and execute OS-level patching (Linux/Windows) and AWS resource upgrades (e.g., RDS minor versions) with minimal business downtime.
- Proactive Observability: Configure and fine-tune CloudWatch dashboards, logs, and alarms to optimize operational visibility while mitigating "alert fatigue."
- FinOps & Cost Optimization: Conduct regular reviews using Trusted Advisor and Cost Explorer to deliver rightsizing recommendations, Savings Plans, and Reserved Instance (RI) strategies to the customer.
Technical Skills & Qualifications
- AWS Core Services: Deep expertise in EC2, S3, VPC (VPN/Direct Connect), RDS, Lambda, Route 53, and ELB.
- Automation / Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Strong proficiency in Terraform (Preferred) or AWS CloudFormation.
- Scripting: Hands-on automation experience utilizing Python or Bash.
- OS Administration: Robust Linux (RHEL/Ubuntu) and Windows Server system administration and troubleshooting.
- Networking & Security: Advanced understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, SSL/TLS, Load Balancing patterns, Security Groups, NACLs, and IAM policies.
- Containers (Plus): Practical experience managing Amazon ECS or Amazon EKS (Kubernetes).
