Job Description

As we scale, we are looking for a General Counsel to lead our legal function, shape how we manage risk across the business, and build a team that grows with us.

This role reports to the Co-CEO and sits at the leadership table. It is, above all, a commercial leadership role with a legal foundation. We are not looking for a technical legal expert who advises from the sidelines. The decisions you will be part of on markets, products, partnerships, and risk will shape AMBOSS’s success and how it continues to grow. We are looking for a senior operator who runs a function, partners deeply with the business, and helps AMBOSS make sharper, faster, better-informed decisions in a complex regulatory environment.

What you will do

Be a true business partner to the Executive Team. You will be the primary legal voice at leadership level, advising the Co-CEOs, the Executive Team, and senior stakeholders on the legal and risk dimensions of the decisions that shape AMBOSS's future. That means M&A, financing, new product launches, market expansions, and the day-to-day commercial questions in between. You will be a proactive advisor who recommends specific paths forward and navigates risk trade-offs, instead of just laying out the legal landscape and leaving the decision to others.

Lead risk management across the business. You will own how AMBOSS identifies, prioritises, and manages legal and regulatory risk across all markets. This includes setting frameworks the business can actually use, calibrating where we need to be conservative versus where we can move quickly, and ensuring that risk thinking is embedded in how decisions get made.

Build and lead a modern legal function. You will lead and grow AMBOSS's legal team of currently 3 team members: hiring, developing, and leading lawyers as we scale. You will define how the function is structured, how it prioritises work, and how it partners effectively with the rest of the business. Setting standards, mentoring colleagues, supporting them in their development and knowing when to bring in external counsel will all be part of the role. Equally important: you will be expected to build a function that leverages AI and modern legal tooling to operate with leverage, not one that scales by headcount alone. We expect our GC to be actively curious about where AI can sharpen legal work, from contract review to research to risk assessment, and to set the standard for how the team adopts these tools.

Cover the full legal spectrum. IP, corporate governance, regulatory matters, employment, commercial contracts, corporate records: you will either handle these directly or ensure they are well-covered within your team. AMBOSS operates across multiple markets, so comfort with cross-border legal questions is essential.

What you bring

  • A completed legal qualification, ideally in German law, with at least 10 years of post-qualification experience, including a substantial period spent in-house preferably at a fast-moving company. Pure law firm backgrounds are not the right fit for this role. Additional experience in US law is a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience leading a legal team of meaningful size: Hiring, developing, and leading a team, with a clear preference for leadership over individual contribution.

  • A track record of making and owning risk-based decisions in a commercial environment, and translating legal complexity into clear, actionable guidance for non-lawyers.

  • Solid grounding in corporate law, with hands-on exposure to M&A, financing rounds, or significant commercial transactions.

  • Meaningful experience in a technology company or similarly complex, fast-moving environment, including familiarity with the legal landscape for digital products (IP, privacy, consumer protection, product counselling).

  • A pragmatic, hands-on interest in AI and legal technology, and a track record (or clear ambition) of using these tools to make legal work faster, sharper, and more scalable.

  • Comfort operating at the pace, pragmatism, and trade-offs that come with sitting inside a business rather than advising from the outside.

You understand that your job is not to eliminate risk but to help the business take the right risks for the right reasons. You make calls with confidence, communicate them with clarity, and stand behind them when challenged.

You are comfortable saying "yes, with these guardrails" more often than "no." You build credibility with the business by being a genuine partner rather than a gatekeeper, and your colleagues across the company come to you because they value your judgment, not just your title.

You bring directness, intellectual honesty, and a genuine absence of ego to everything you do. You care about developing the people around you, and you take the responsibility of building a team seriously.
