Senior Full Stack Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to lead the design and delivery of complex, high-impact digital systems. You will drive technical excellence, champion modern engineering practices, and help shape the direction of AI-powered products that serve the public good. This role sits at the intersection of full-stack development, generative AI, and cloud infrastructure — within a regulated, mission-driven environment.

Responsibilities

• Technical ownership: Lead end-to-end delivery of complex features, from architectural design through production release, ensuring systems are robust, scalable, and aligned with long-term platform goals.
• Engineering excellence: Establish and raise the bar on engineering standards — code quality, security, maintainability, and reusability — across the squad and broader engineering org.
• Architecture & design: Take an active role in squad-level technical decisions and architectural discussions, advocating for best practices in modern software development.
• Strategic influence: Partner with leadership to shape the technical direction of digital initiatives and contribute to infrastructure roadmapping that meets future organisational needs.
• Culture building: Define and refine engineering practices, tooling, and norms that foster a strong, effective, and collaborative team culture.
• Stakeholder management: Independently navigate cross-team dependencies and communicate technical concepts clearly to senior leaders, legal domain experts, and non-technical stakeholders.

Requirements

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of building and maintaining large-scale, high-availability systems.
• Full-stack development: Deep expertise in modern full-stack web application architecture. Proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript for frontend, and TypeScript or Python for backend and AI-related services.
• Generative AI: Hands-on experience building GenAI-powered features, including working with LLMs, implementing RAG pipelines, and integrating AI capabilities into production applications.
• Cloud & infrastructure: Strong hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure. Proficiency in Infrastructure as Code using Terraform. Familiarity with designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines within the SHIP-HATS ecosystem using GitLab CI.

Nice to have

Experience in public sector, legal, or highly regulated environments is a strong plus. Candidates who have worked within government digital transformation programmes or with compliance-sensitive systems are especially welcome.
