Site Reliability Engineer (Databases, DevOps)
Job Description
The Cloud Data Services team is responsible for developing and operating the Databases as a Service in IBM Cloud. We build a customized platform on Kubernetes that hosts a breadth of database technologies, such as PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, MySQL, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, or Kafka. We are seeking cloud developers who have a passion for automating, running, and operating secure, highly-available databases. You will write tooling that enable troubleshooting and self-healing, build containers, develop tests, define best practices, and work complex client escalations. You must have an understanding in software development, be self-driven, innovative, and passionate about automating everything to reduce operational toil. It is not required to be a databases expert - but you must have a passion for learning to be successful in this role. At the end, you can be a subject matter expert on cloud and databases. Beyond simply leveraging these tools, you will have the opportunity—and encouragement—to actively contribute back to the open source community by improving features, fixing issues, and collaborating with global contributors. You will join our “follow-the-sun" rotation where you will be the primary responder for automated system alerts, and level 3 escalations for support. This duty is limited to 6 hours during daytime and includes some weekends. The rotation consists of all staff in our European region to reduce rotation frequency. You will follow runbooks to resolve such issues and use your troubleshooting and analytical skills to diagnose or troubleshoot platform or Data Service issues. Experience with Software Development (preferably Python or Golang), experience in leveraging a variety of coding technologies to drive system excellence, developing innovative solutions that enhance system reliability, scalability, and performance. Experience with troubleshooting production systems and building automation and runbooks for resolving issues Cross-Functional Collaboration: Experience working closely with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment and effective communication, driving solutions that meet business requirements and stakeholder expectations. Demonstrated experience operating one or more of PostgreSQL (or EDB), MongoDB (including Enterprise version), Redis, Elasticsearch, MySQL, RabbitMQ, or Kafka (or similar) in production environments; Knowledge of database application best practices, including schema and index designs. Experience in application and performance design using databases and troubleshooting of application-side database issues. Experience with Kubernetes in production - and CI/CD environments.
