The Principal Lactation Nurse leads and delivers comprehensive breastfeeding support services, providing expert clinical guidance to patients and healthcare teams. The role ensures high-quality, evidence-based lactation care, supports staff development, and drives continuous improvement in maternal and infant care services aligned with organisational goals.
Responsibilities
- Provide breastfeeding assessment, education, and support to mothers across antenatal, inpatient, and post-discharge stages.
- Manage and coordinate care for breastfeeding patients, including those with complex needs.
- Document clinical interventions, patient responses, and outcomes related to lactation care.
- Conduct antenatal breastfeeding and infant care education classes.
- Serve as a clinical expert and resource for healthcare professionals, patients, and families; advocate for breastfeeding best practices.
- Supervise, mentor, and support junior lactation consultants and nursing staff.
- Plan and deliver in-service education and training for staff.
- Participate in and support quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and coordinate care delivery and staff allocation.
- Liaise with community resources such as Association for Breastfeeding Advocacy (Singapore) and Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) to promote best practices.
- Maintain professional development and participate in committees, meetings, and relevant workshops.
- Ensure a safe, clean, and supportive care environment and perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
Education & Certification
- Diploma or Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
- Current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification.
Licensure
- Registered Nurse with a valid Practising Certificate from the Singapore Nursing Board (SNB).
- Licensed to practice as a Lactation Consultant.
Experience& Competencies
- Relevant experience in lactation consulting and maternal-child health.
- Strong clinical, communication, and teaching skills.
- Ability to manage complex cases and work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated leadership, coaching, and mentoring capabilities.
Work Environment
- Exposure to clinical risks such as infections, sharps injuries, and physical strain.
- Requires resilience in handling demanding patient and family situations.
