Summary

The Senior Machinist is responsible for the advanced setup, programming, and operation of CNC and conventional machine tools to produce high-precision components in accordance with engineering specifications. This role requires strong technical expertise in machining processes, particularly in 2-axis CNC turning and 5-axis CNC milling, along with the ability to troubleshoot machining issues and improve production efficiency.

The Senior Machinist plays a critical role in maintaining product quality, mentoring junior machinists, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. This position involves interpreting complex technical drawings, refining machining methods, and ensuring high standards of accuracy, productivity, and safety across manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities

Advanced CNC Machine Setup and Operation

  • Set up, operate, and optimize CNC and conventional machines for complex machining processes, including milling, turning, grinding, and drilling.
  • Perform advanced 2-axis CNC turning and 5-axis CNC milling with minimal supervision.
  • Select suitable cutting tools, fixtures, and machining strategies for precision components.
  • Ensure machine setups are accurate and capable of achieving tight tolerances and superior surface finishes.

Technical Interpretation and Process Planning

  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, blueprints, and CAD/CAM data.
  • Determine machining methods, process flow, and operation sequences for efficient production.
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to ensure compliance with technical specifications.
  • Provide technical recommendations to improve manufacturability, reduce cost, and enhance efficiency.

Measurement and Quality Control

  • Conduct precise measurements and inspections using micrometers, Vernier calipers, gauges, and other measuring instruments.
  • Verify that all machined components meet quality standards and customer requirements.
  • Investigate and resolve dimensional discrepancies, defects, and machining issues.

CNC Programming and Optimization

  • Create, modify, and optimize CNC programs to improve machining performance and reduce cycle time.
  • Select appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, and tool paths based on materials and production requirements.
  • Continuously improve machining processes to increase productivity, consistency, and efficiency.

Machine Maintenance and Troubleshooting

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot machine malfunctions, process deviations, and tooling issues.
  • Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and minor machine repairs.
  • Ensure machines are operating safely, efficiently, and in compliance with production requirements.

Leadership and Production Support

  • Mentor and guide junior machinists and machine operators on machining techniques and best practices.
  • Support production scheduling and ensure timely completion of assigned jobs.
  • Work closely with supervisors and engineers to achieve production targets and quality objectives.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts on the shop floor.

Workplace and Team Collaboration

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in accordance with workplace safety standards.
  • Document machining processes, improvements, and production issues accurately.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • NTC / ITC / Diploma in Precision Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience in CNC machining or precision manufacturing.
  • Strong hands-on experience in 2-axis CNC turning and 5-axis CNC milling.
  • Proven ability to independently perform machine setup, CNC programming, and troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, blueprints, and CAD files.
  • Solid knowledge of machining processes, cutting tools, materials, and machining techniques.
  • Experience in process optimization and continuous improvement is an advantage.
  • Willing to work shifts when required.
  • Strong problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Good command of spoken and written English.
