Postdoctoral Researcher (PreFerS - 1)
Job Description
Introduction to The Centre for Precision Fermentation and Sustainability:
The Centre for Precision Fermentation and Sustainability (PreFerS) is a research program hosted by the Illinois Advanced Research Center at Singapore Ltd.(Illinois ARCS). The program aims to develop advanced fundamental sciences and technologies to implement fermentation-based production of foods and food ingredients, and also to enhance food security and sustainability in Singapore, particularly addressing the micronutrient food insecurity through precision fermentation.
Position Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our team in advancing protein expression and strain engineering projects using Komagataella phaffii (Pichia pastoris). The successful candidate will play a key role in developing optimized expression systems, engineering strains for enhanced yield, and contributing to downstream applications in biotechnology and food innovation.
Key Responsibilities:
· Design, construct, and evaluate recombinant K. phaffii strains for high-level protein expression.
· Perform molecular cloning, promoter screening, and vector optimization for heterologous protein production.
· Develop high through put screens for evaluation of protein expression.
· Conduct fermentation experiments in flask and bioreactor formats, optimizing growth conditions and induction strategies.
· Apply strain engineering approaches (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9, metabolic pathway optimization) to improve protein yield and stability.
· Collaborate with team members on purification workflows, analytical characterization, and functional assays of expressed proteins.
· Participate in the development of project strategy.
· Document experimental results, prepare technical reports, and contribute to publications and grant proposals.
· Mentor junior researchers and support collaborative projects across the laboratory.
Job Requirements:
· PhD in Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or related field.
· Strong expertise in yeast genetics and protein expression, particularly with K. phaffii.
· Hands-on experience with cloning, strain engineering, and fermentation techniques.
· Familiarity with protein purification methods (e.g., affinity chromatography, FPLC).
· Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot experimental challenges and design innovative solutions.
· Strong publication record in relevant fields.
· Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Skills
· Experience with synthetic biology tools for pathway engineering.
· Knowledge of bioprocess scale-up and bioreactor operation.
· Familiarity with omics-based approaches (transcriptomics, proteomics) for strain characterization.
· Ability to align research outcomes with industrial biotechnology applications.
Opportunities
· Work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment focused on sustainable biotechnology.
· Contribute to projects with direct relevance to food innovation and precision fermentation.
· Access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and fermentation equipment.
· Professional development through publications, conferences, and industry collaborations.
Application Process:
*Interested candidates should submit their resume/CV together with a cover letter outlining their qualifications and relevant experience for the position. Please also include the names and contact details of three professional referees.
Applications will be considered until the corresponding position has been filled. Only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
