Job Description

The Research Assistant will participate in a research project which examines key processes of carbon cycling in blue carbon ecosystems. Bulk of the research will focus on mesocosm experiments in ex situ aquaria.

The Research Assistant will lead and execute mesocosm experiments, laboratory analysis and data curation. Fieldwork in seagrass and mangrove habitats will be required. Specific tasks include:

  • Planning and conducting experimental and laboratory work
  • Collection and analysis of data
  • Performing basic administrative duties
  • Some outreach duties are expected

This position reports to the Principle Investigator at Tropical Marine Science Institute and is based at St John Island National Marine Laboratory on offshore St John Island, Singapore. This position is for 1 year; after first year, renewal is subjected to performance review. 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Science, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Proficient with basic Microsoft Suite and basic statistical analyses
  • Prior experience for seawater aquarium facilities, and marine and intertidal field work is highly preferred
  • Must be willing to do intertidal field work, which entails working in muddy environment and working around low tide timings
  • Self-motivated, driven, and a keen interest in research
  • Effective oral and written communication skills in English
