Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Role Summary 

The Pastoral Care Officer provides first-response behavioural and emotional support to students aged 6 to 12. Working within the school's student support ecosystem, the Officer responds to classroom incidents, provides basic counselling and triaging, befriends at-risk students, and supports after-school programmes for high-needs pupils. 

This is a school-based, student-facing role requiring patience, emotional resilience, and the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, counsellors, and allied educators. 

Key Responsibilities 

1. First Responding (Critical Incident Support) 

  • Respond promptly to calls for assistance from teachers to remove distressed or dysregulated students from classrooms 

  • Escort students to designated pull-out locations for de-escalation and support 

  • Provide triage and basic counselling for students who exhibit emotional flare-ups or behavioural dysregulation 

  • Make initial contact with parents to provide first updates following incidents 

  • Provide verbal and written input to School Counsellors (SC), Special Educational Needs Officers (SENO), Discipline Masters (DM), and Student Development Teams (SDT) for structured follow-up 

2. Befriending and Mentoring 

  • Build trust-based relationships with students identified as being at risk of re-offending or persistent behavioural challenges 

  • Conduct regular check-ins and mentoring sessions during school hours 

  • Use evidence-informed behavioural and relational techniques to encourage positive choices and self-regulation 

3. Student Engagement and Programme Support 

  • Manage the Student Engagement Activity Hub during designated hours 

  • Support after-school programmes and learning journeys for high-needs pupils, including those with social, emotional, or behavioural difficulties 

  • Assist in the supervision and facilitation of small-group activities designed to build social skills and emotional resilience 

4. Collaboration and Case Awareness 

  • Attend Case Management Team (CMT) meetings to remain familiar with identified Students with Additional Needs (SwANs) 

  • Share observational insights with the school's pastoral care and discipline teams 

  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with school policies and the ITQ's confidentiality clause 

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory) 

Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science in Psychology or Counselling 


Experience 

- At least 2 years of demonstrated experience working directly with children aged 6 to 12 

- Candidates without a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or Counselling will not meet the mandatory requirements  

- Preferred Competencies (Not Mandatory, but Strengthen Your Application) 

  • Experience working in a primary school, student care centre, or paediatric mental health setting 

  • Familiarity with behaviour de-escalation techniques and basic counselling frameworks 

  • Ability to remain calm and professional during student meltdowns or crisis situations 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for incident documentation and parent updates 

  • SAC membership (any level) or SSI Para-Counselling Certificate is an advantage 

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office for documentation and email communication 

Personal Attributes 

  • Patient and emotionally regulated when working with distressed children 

  • Culturally sensitive and able to work within a Singapore mainstream school environment 

  • Team-oriented – able to take direction from teachers, counsellors, and school leaders 

  • Reliable and punctual – school hours are fixed and attendance is critical 

  • Discreet – handles sensitive student and family information appropriately 

Assignment Duration 

  • Contract Period: 1 July 2026 – 30 November 2026 (5 months) 

  • Optional Extension: 1 January 2027 – 30 November 2027 (10 months, excluding June 2027), at the sole discretion of the school 

Reporting Location: Yishun, Singapore  

Working Hours: Mondays to Fridays: 7:30 am to 4:00 pm (inclusive of 30-minute lunch break) 

Not required on: Saturdays, Sundays, and gazetted public holidays.
