Meet the Team

Torc's Data Ingest and Infrastructure Team is part of the larger Data Engineering Team within the Data Ops and Engineering division at TORC. Data Engineering is a highly collaborative group focused on building secure, scalable systems that enable customers and internal teams to work with data easily and confidently. We operate as a distributed, remote-first team, ensuring everyone has equal access to information and collaboration. As owners of our services end-to-end, we are responsible for the reliability, scalability, and evolution of Torc's data platform. What You'll Do

As the Manager, Engineering – Data Ingest and Infrastructure, you will lead a team responsible for ingesting petabytes of autonomous vehicle and simulation data and making that data available in multiple formats. Customers of that data include Autonomy Developers, Machine Learning engineers, vehicle fleet operations and test personnel and more. You’ll do this by building and operating the data infrastructure that powers analytics, simulation, machine learning, and autonomous vehicle development across Torc. You will combine strong technical leadership with people management, helping your team deliver scalable data solutions while fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and operational excellence.

  • Lead, coach, and develop a team of Data Engineers, supporting career growth, performance, and engagement.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-performing engineering culture.
  • Partner with recruiting and leadership teams to attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance while enabling engineers to take ownership of solutions and outcomes.
  • Establish team goals, priorities, and execution plans aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Technical Leadership
  • Drive the strategy, architecture, and execution for data ingestion and retrieval at Torc.
  • Manage on-prem compute responsible for the transfer of data to our cloud partner, AWS
  • Oversee the rollout of edge compute for data pre-processing and on-prem compute for ML training
  • Define and develop meaningful product metrics representing system utilization and performance
  • Guide the design and implementation of robust, scalable, and resilient data pipelines processing massive daily volumes of vehicle and simulation data
  • Oversee the development of services that provide ingested data to Torc's Data Factory, enabling reliable delivery of data for machine learning training and evaluation at scale.
  • Champion best practices for software engineering, infrastructure as code, testing, security, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Lead architectural reviews and technical decision-making for distributed storage systems, cloud-native services, and large-scale data processing platforms.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership
  • Collaborate with leaders and teams across Perception, Planning, Controls, Mapping, Simulation, Vehicle Testing, and Machine Learning to deliver solutions that accelerate autonomous vehicle development.
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering leadership to define roadmaps, prioritize investments, and balance short-term delivery with long-term platform evolution.
  • Support the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies that enhance Torc's ability to build, deploy, and validate safety-critical autonomous systems.
  • Operational Excellence
  • Ensure the reliability, scalability, and performance of production data systems.
  • Lead operational readiness efforts, including monitoring, incident management, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in and support the team's business-hours on-call rotation while driving improvements that reduce operational burden and increase system resilience.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

  • BS/MS degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of software or data engineering experience, with demonstrated experience building and operating cloud-based data platforms.
  • Engineering management or technical leadership experience leading high-performing teams.
  • Strong experience developing solutions in Python.
  • Experience designing and operating large-scale data pipelines and distributed data systems.
  • Experience with cloud-native architectures, preferably AWS.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and modern software development practices.
  • Experience working with Linux environments and automation through scripting.
  • Proven ability to lead technical discussions, influence architectural decisions, and drive execution across multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with observability and monitoring systems such as DataDog
  • Strong communication, organizational, and prioritization skills.

Bonus Points!

  • Experience leading teams supporting machine learning, AI, or autonomous vehicle development workflows.
  • Experience with managing on-prem, Linux based infrastructure
  • Experience with managing AI Infrastructure on cloud platforms and on-prem hardware
  • Knowledge of AWS serverless architectures including Lambda, Batch, ECS/Fargate, Glue, and Athena.
  • Experience with Databricks for data engineering, analytics, and production workloads.
  • Experience scaling data infrastructure to support ML and AI workloads, including Ray or similar distributed computing frameworks.
  • Knowledge of modern data architectures, including relational databases, NoSQL systems, data warehouses, vector databases, and distributed storage platforms.
  • Experience with data acquisition, storage, and processing patterns for robotics, autonomous systems, or advanced driver assistance technologies.
  • Experience building and scaling geographically distributed engineering teams.
  • Demonstrated success developing engineers, creating career growth opportunities, and fostering a strong engineering culture.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several geographic markets. Pay is based on a number of factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Torc's total compensation package will also include our corporate bonus and stock option plan. Dependent on the position offered, sign-on payments, relocation, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
