Senior Software Engineer
Job Description
Illumina is seeking a highly motivated Full Stack Software Engineer to join the Bioinformatics organization. Our teams develop software that helps scientists organize, analyze, and interpret complex biological data from Illumina’s multi-omics technologies. Our products combine interactive web applications, large scientific datasets, and long-running computational analyses. Engineers work across new product experiences and established codebases, delivering new capabilities while improving existing systems safely and incrementally. Responsibilities
- Independently deliver full-stack features across user interfaces, backend services, databases, and external integrations.
- Build workflows for ingesting, organizing, transforming, analyzing, and presenting scientific data.
- Create highly interactive visual experiences for exploring and manipulating large, complex datasets.
- Extend and modernize established applications while improving maintainability, performance, reliability, and test coverage.
- Collaborate with scientists, product partners, designers, and engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and iterative delivery.
Required Skills and Experience
- Experience developing data-intensive web applications with complex, interactive user interfaces.
- Strong TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS skills, using Angular, React, or a comparable framework.
- Strong Java or Kotlin experience developing backend services with Spring Boot or a similar JVM framework.
- Experience with REST APIs, service integrations, asynchronous processing, SQL, and relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
- Experience with cloud and container technologies, automated testing, CI/CD, and responsible use of AI-assisted development tools.
- Demonstrated success delivering high-quality software using Scrum, Kanban, or similar collaborative development practices.
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Experience with open-source visualization frameworks, canvas, WebGL, SVG, scene graphs, or spatial interaction patterns.
- Experience with AWS, object storage, messaging systems, Redis, Docker, Kubernetes, or Helm.
- Experience with OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and secure multi-user applications.
- Experience developing genomics, bioinformatics, scientific computing, or multi-omics software.
- Experience with releases requiring documented requirements, traceable testing, review evidence, and controlled changes.
Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with five or more years of professional software development experience.
