Job Description

Level is a learning technology company dedicated to helping students build real academic and life skills with confidence and joy. We combine proven curriculum principles with world class interactive design to make meaningful practice something students want to come back to, not something they struggle through.

We support what teachers, schools, and parents are already doing by increasing student engagement with high quality, standards aligned practice that reinforces classroom learning. That’s why we’re building:

For students: Rewarding and motivating learning experiences that meet students where they are to build real academic proficiency.

For educators: Tools that fit naturally into instruction and help students stay engaged while reducing teacher workload.

For parents: Activities that help your kid catch up or get ahead, build confidence, and minimize homework battles, whether learning at school or at home.

We are committed to helping every person maximize their potential and live a life of meaning. It’s a difficult problem that requires brilliant people and tremendous effort over time.

Level is looking for an experienced Technical Designer to join our innovative team and contribute to design excellence across our product portfolio. You will be instrumental in shaping the core systems and mechanics of our games across all platforms, ensuring they deliver creative, engaging and scalable experiences for players of all ages. Operating with significant autonomy in a dynamic development environment, you'll tackle complex, often ambiguous design challenges crucial to delivering high-quality interactive experiences.

What You Will Do:

  • Design, implement and iterate on systems and gameplay central to our intended player experiences through rapid prototyping and feedback cycles.

  • Translate high-level design concepts into actionable technical solutions while maintaining creative integrity and player engagement.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement complex game systems and mechanics, optimizing for performance, scalability, and maintainability where appropriate.

  • Work with Artists and Art leadership to collaborate on presentation principles for your designs.

  • Drive the creation of innovative feature and/or system development, helping to prioritize and scope designs as necessary.

  • Be comfortable working across varied projects - adapting to changes in priorities, integrating new tools and pipelines, and incorporating feedback as part of our iterative development process.

  • Facilitate clear and effective communication that encourages collaboration, innovation, and a positive team environment.

  • Mentor and/or support other team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.

  • Contribute to the development and documentation of best practices, workflows, and pipelines within the game and creative tools teams.

What You Need:

  • 5+ years of experience in technical design, systems design, or related engineering roles.

  • Work history of released titles demonstrating complex technical design projects and problem-solving approach.

  • Strong proficiency in design and rapid prototyping.

  • Solid understanding of software development lifecycle and project management methodologies.

  • Experience with various game engines such as Godot, Unreal Engine, Unity and modern frameworks.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to iterate based on feedback in a collaborative development environment.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working on projects that include multiple smaller experiences.

  • Design theory knowledge based on human psychology and motivation.

  • Experience with UI/UX, technical art, or other art pipelines.

  • Interest/Experience with education, instructional design, and/or making games with a focus on player accessibility.
